Inside a solar system you will have a living world with activities depending on the node type, its controlling faction, and its neighboring nodes. For example, a federation node that borders with a pirate controlled node will have pirate raids from time to time.
During the game the player can design ships in his fleet, the ships can be controlled by the player or by the computer. Since the design of the ships is not known in advance it is impossible to write a hard coded AI for each ship design. To solve this problem
Remember the Super-Melee from Star Control 2? This is a similar idea. You choose ships for your team and for the AI’s, and then duke it out in pure space combat, with no distractions, only space battle awesomeness!
We were looking for an easy way to customize our ships and save our results. Until now we’ve been able to make changes to a ship from within the game, but it wouldn’t be saved, and we’d have to manually change the code for that.
So we started implementing the Load/Save mechanism.
