Factories, Fabricators, and Automated Crafting

In this week’s post I’d like to tell you about factories.

Our plan is for Star Singularity to feature a comprehensive and immersive crafting system, but we’ll talk about that in another post perhaps.

A Factory is a special type of building/ship in space. It holds a Fabricator. A Fabricator knows how to utilize a single set of blueprints to create just that one item automatically. This means that as long as it has the required items to craft that item, it continually produces it, limited only by the time it takes to craft the item and the cost.

A factory can be programmed to eject an item into space in a specific direction after it has finished producing it. In this way you can have one factory provide its output to the next factory in line, which in turn will create a more complex item, and so forth. Chaining factories in this way will allow you to automatically create an item you have blueprints for, with just the raw materials required to create it or its comprising components.

The AI factions will certainly be using this feature, and so should you.

What do you think about supplying the reagents to the factories? We’re leaning towards having automated mining ships, which will keep mining and dumping their cargo at the first factory’s doorstep.

Let us know in the comments if you have any other ideas regarding this!
